Portuguese European Transcription Services

GoLocalise offers transcription services for audio and video files in over 100 languages as well as English.

Professional European Portuguese Transcription Services

European Portuguese is the official language of Portugal and an essential language across business, law, academia, and media in Europe, Africa, and beyond. Unlike Brazilian Portuguese, the European variant maintains a more formal tone, distinct phonetics, and grammatical structures, making transcription a task that demands precision and native expertise. Whether for corporate reports, legal hearings, government documentation, or media production, professional transcription ensures that spoken content is accurately documented and properly formatted.

At GoLocalise, we specialise in European Portuguese transcription services, providing structured, industry-compliant text that respects linguistic nuances and professional standards. Our team of native European Portuguese transcriptionists is skilled in handling formal business Portuguese, technical terminology, and regional dialects, ensuring that transcriptions are clear, accurate, and fully adapted to the European market.

European Portuguese differs significantly from its Brazilian counterpart, particularly in sentence structure, vocabulary choices, and speech rhythms. Automated transcription tools often struggle to recognise these distinctions, which is why human expertise is crucial. Whether your project involves business conferences, legal statements, research interviews, or media projects, our transcriptionists ensure that your message is clearly conveyed and professionally formatted.

By working with GoLocalise, you gain access to native European Portuguese transcription specialists who provide flawless, industry-specific text that enhances clarity and credibility in professional, legal, and corporate communication.

We used GoLocalise to voice several of our films in Vietnamese. The service was friendly and professional. Being able to attend the recording sessions gave me confidence; the sound engineer had taken a lot of time to familiarise himself with our films and scripts, and the voice talents were incredibly competent and good at adapting to any changes in the scripts as we recorded. The whole process was incredibly smooth and I felt in safe hands.

What Do Our European Portuguese Audio and Video Transcription Services Include?

Verbatim Transcription

A voice-to-text method that captures everything spoken, including interjections, signs of emotion (coughs, sighs, chuckles), false starts, and thought process shifts. It’s useful for reference during editing, but not ideal for finished, polished content.

Word-for-word transcription

This captures the speech exactly as it’s spoken, omitting filler words but without correcting grammar or sentence structure. It’s useful when accuracy is needed, but without polishing the final result.

Grammatically correct transcription

Filler words, false starts, and mispronunciations are eliminated, with grammar corrected. This creates a refined document that reads more like proper text, ideal for publishing or any public-facing material.

What Are the Benefits of Transcribing Your European Portuguese Audio or Video Content with GoLocalise?

Makes Your Content More Discoverable

Take a podcast, for instance. By providing a text version of your audio content, search engines like Google can easily index and include it in their search results. When people search for keywords related to your subject matter, they’re far more likely to come across your material. This not only boosts your visibility but also significantly increases traffic to your site, expanding your reach and enhancing your online presence.

Increases the Likelihood of Your Content Being Quoted

Journalists, bloggers, and other content creators often rely on quotes and citations to back up their arguments. When faced with two equally credible sources, one of which has already been transcribed, the transcribed version is much more likely to be chosen. Having your content available in written form makes it far easier for others to reference and quote, increasing the chances of your material being used in a variety of publications and discussions.

Repurpose Your Content for Greater Reach

Creating high-quality audiovisual content, whether a podcast or a video, is both time-consuming and expensive. Why restrict it to just one format or platform? With a transcript, you can repurpose your content into a range of new formats, such as blog posts, social media updates, or short teaser clips that can attract new audiences. This process not only drives more traffic to your site but also ensures that your original content continues to serve a variety of purposes, maximising its value and impact.

Makes Your Content Accessible to a Wider Audience

One of the most important benefits of transcription is the increased accessibility it provides, particularly for people with hearing impairments. Without a written transcript, your audio or video content remains completely inaccessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Providing a transcript ensures that everyone, regardless of their hearing ability, can engage with your content, helping to make your message more inclusive and far-reaching.

Connects You with People Who Speak Other Languages

In the UK alone, there are approximately 550,000 Polish speakers, along with over a million speakers of languages such as Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, and Urdu. For many second-language speakers, especially when the content involves complex topics or colloquial expressions, following along with audio in a non-native language can be challenging. By providing a written transcript, you give these audiences a valuable resource to help them understand and engage with your content more effectively, bridging the gap between language barriers.

And There are Many More Reasons

Creating your audiovisual content, whether that's a podcast or a video of some kind, is often an incredibly time-consuming and expensive process. So why use it for only one purpose? You can use a transcription to repurpose your materials into a blog or social media post, to drive traffic to your website, to use as a teaser to bring people to a full-length podcast, and many more uses too.

Industries Relying on Accurate European Portuguese Transcription

European Portuguese transcription plays a key role across various industries, allowing professionals and businesses to preserve, analyse, and structure spoken content for practical use. We offer industry-specialised transcription services for:

  • Legal & Government Institutions – Law firms, courts, and government agencies require transcriptions for legal contracts, official statements, and policy documentation, ensuring that records adhere to European and national legal frameworks.
  • Media & Content Creation – Portugal’s television, film, and digital media industries use transcription for subtitles, production notes, and interview records, ensuring that content is adapted for various audiences.
  • Education & Research – Universities and research centres rely on transcription for lectures, case studies, and academic interviews, preserving valuable data for future analysis.
  • Technology & AI Development – Transcription supports the development of voice recognition software, AI-powered speech processing, and automated subtitling, improving digital experiences for European Portuguese speakers.

Why European Portuguese Transcription Requires Native Expertise

European Portuguese has a highly structured yet flexible grammar, meaning that word order and phrasing vary depending on context. Without native knowledge, transcription errors can change the intended meaning, which can be problematic in legal, corporate, and media applications.

Moreover, pronunciation and phrasing in Portugal differ considerably from those in Brazilian Portuguese, often leading to misinterpretations in automated transcriptions. In Portugal, speech is more rapid and vowel reductions are common, making human expertise essential for capturing accurate transcriptions.

For example, while “Você” is commonly used for formal address in Brazil, in Portugal, the preference is often “O senhor” or “A senhora” in business or legal contexts. Such distinctions must be maintained in transcription to preserve the appropriate level of formality and clarity.

At GoLocalise, our native European Portuguese transcriptionists ensure that each transcript is precisely formatted, linguistically correct, and suitable for professional use, eliminating ambiguities and misinterpretations.

What Is Transcription?

No, this isn’t a trick question and you might be surprised how many people get this wrong. In simple terms, transcription is the process of listening to audiovisual content and writing down what is heard.

Seems simple enough, so what exactly is the part that confuses people?

We used GoLocalise to voice several of our films in Vietnamese. The service was friendly and professional. Being able to attend the recording sessions gave me confidence; the sound engineer had taken a lot of time to familiarise himself with our films and scripts, and the voice talents were incredibly competent and good at adapting to any changes in the scripts as we recorded. Understanding The Difference Between Transcription and Translation

Many people confuse transcription with translation.

If you need a text version of your audiovisual content in a language which is different to the original language of your source material then you need translation (which, by the way, we can also help you with).

If you’re simply in need of a written transcript in the same language as your original audiovisual materials, that is transcription and you’re in the right place.

Can I Use a Transcription As Subtitles?

Yes, and no. GoLocalise specialises in anything audiovisual so of course if you’re in need of a full subtitling service we can absolutely help with that too, and in fact transcription is an integral part of the process when creating a same-language subtitle file.

The main difference here would be that subtitling also requires very precise technological know-how so that the resultant subtitles follow subtitling conventions and don’t prove to be distracting to the viewer.

A transcription by default won’t necessarily follow these guidelines and is better suited for other purposes, such as the ones listed above.

A Brief History Of Portuguese European

Portuguese (português or, in full, língua portuguesa) is a Romance language and the sole official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe. It also has co-official language status in Macau and East Timor. As the result of expansion during colonial times, a cultural presence of Portuguese and Portuguese creole speakers are also found in Goa, Daman and Diu in India; in Batticaloa on the east coast of Sri Lanka, in the Indonesian island of Flores, and in Malacca in Malaysia.

Portuguese is a part of the Ibero-Romance group that evolved from several dialects of Vulgar Latin in the medieval Kingdom of Galicia. With approximately 215 to 220 million native speakers and 260 million total speakers, Portuguese is usually listed as the fifth most natively spoken language, the third most spoken European language in terms of native speakers and a major language of the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the most spoken language in South America and the second most spoken in Latin America after Spanish, and is an official language of the European Union and Mercosul.

Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes once called Portuguese “the sweet and gracious language” and Spanish playwright Lope de Vega referred to it as “sweet”, while the Brazilian writer Olavo Bilacpoetically described it as “a última flor do Lácio, inculta e bela” (the last flower of Latium, rustic and beautiful). Portuguese is also termed “the language of Camões”, after one of the greatest literary figures in the Portuguese language, Luís Vaz de Camões.

In March 2006, the Museum of the Portuguese Language, an interactive museum about the Portuguese language, was founded in São Paulo, Brazil, the city with the greatest number of Portuguese language speakers in the world. The Museum is the first of its kind in the world.

Dialects

Modern Standard European Portuguese (português padrão) is based on the Portuguese spoken in the area including and surrounding the cities of Coimbra and Lisbon, in central Portugal, while modern Standard Brazilian Portuguese (português neutro) is based on the Portuguese spoken in the area including and surrounding the city of Rio de Janeiro, in south-eastern Brazil, which if vanished from its stereotypical traits i.e. its strong European flavour in phonology and prosody, is linguistically a halfway between Brazilian dialects and accents. Standard European Portuguese is also the preferred standard by the Portuguese-speaking African countries. As such, and despite the fact that its speakers are dispersed around the world, Portuguese has only two dialects used for learning: the European and the Brazilian.
