International Women’s Day originated from International Working Women’s Day. According to The Independent, International Working Women’s Day was first celebrated in New York on February 28, 1909, in remembrance of a 1908 strike of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. On that day, 15,000 workers, including many immigrants, marched through the city’s lower east side to demand social and political rights.

The first modern International Women’s Day was held in 1914, five years afterward, on March 8. The day was chosen because it was a Sunday, so the majority of women would have off work. They could then participate in marches and other events. Even though it falls on different days of the week, International Women’s Day has been celebrated on today’s date ever since.

Today, International Women’s Day, is used as an opportunity to fight and protest the inequality that women still face in modern society. Strikes are taking place across the globe in over 100 countries to highlight and combat issues such as equal pay, reproductive rights, oppression and sexual harassment among many others. But this day isn’t just about the hardships that women have faced throughout history and the present day, it’s also a celebration of the extraordinary accomplishments of women.

From the Suffragettes’ fight for the right to vote from 1903 to 1928, to Malala Yousafzai and thousands of modern school girls fighting for the right to education in Pakistan and around the world. To celebrate the special day at the office, Bene surprised all the girls with some beautiful tulips, along with inspirational notes!

The aim of International Women’s Day is to inspire current and future generations to push the boundaries of society in the pursuit of equality for all people no matter your age, race or gender.
